Food And Drink

The Gambia offers some of the best food anywhere in West Africa, and one of the things we hear most frequently from people returning from The Gambia for the first time is just how good and how reasonably priced the food is – indeed it’s often a big part of the lure that draws people back to The Gambia time and time again.

Whether you fancy Gambian, Thai, Indian, Italian, Lebanese, Mexican or simply fine international cuisine you will always find something to tantalise your taste buds.

The meals tend to be based around local dishes of meat, vegetables or fish and generally served with a sauce such as mafay or domodah – all on a bed of the local staple, rice. You can also get a good variety of western-style meals as well and thanks to the thriving and multi-cultural nature of the resort areas there is a whole raft of international cuisines to choose from, and you could easily dine out in a different country every night of the week if you chose.

Lunch at Wendy’s

We don’t get Wendy’s often. Yeah, classy I know.

Best Antioxidant Food And Drink

There are some antioxidants the body is capable of synthesizing from its own sources. Glutathione is one such antioxidant and it gets synthesized in cells from amino acids.

But there are quite a few antioxidants that the body needs and our diet is the main source to provide them. Here are some of the best antioxidant food and drink sources.

Berries -- Berries are full of fiber, minerals, and vitamins and are a rich source of antioxidants. Blue berries, raspberries and black berries are rich in proanthocyanidins that is capable of cancer and heart disease.

Broccoli -- Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts contain a compound called indole-3-carbinol and are known to prevent cancer and heart disease. The antioxidant present in these vegetables is capable of breaking down estrogen in the body hence reduces the risk of estrogen sensitive cancers such as breast cancer and cancer of the ovaries and the cervix.

Tomatoes -- Tomatoes contain lycopene a member of the carotenoid family and it is known to ward off prostate cancer in men. They also contain the antioxidant glutathione which is known to boost the immune function.

Garlic -- Garlic has the property of lowering cholesterol levels, reducing blood pressure, fighting free radicals and keeping blood from clotting. Eating garlic regularly is known to prevent cancer.

Spinach -- Antioxidant lutein present in spinach can reduce the possibility of cataract and muscular degeneration and can improve the health of the eye.

Tea -- Tea too contains antioxidants, which are known to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease and stroke.

Health, Well-being & Care

The role of the Environmental Health Department is to ensure that Food Safety Legislation is observed in food businesses in the Bradford district where food and drink is produced, stored and sold. In addition we also investigate food complaints and general complaints about food businesses.

We can also offer advice and assistance to both businesses and members of the public on a range of related topics and have a supply of useful booklets and leaflets, many of which are available free of charge.
